Directed by Jeff Arch from his screenplay adaptation of the book by Dave Barry, Dave Barrys Complete Guide to Guys is a production of Labrador Pictures, LLC in association with Wardenclyffe Entertainment and David Shor Productions. Pre-production began on the film on March 15, 2004 and shooting began in Miami in May 2004. Shooting continued in California in September October 2004. G2G premiered as the Centerpiece Screening at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival on 2/2/05.
The story of G2G began in 1998, on the island of Maui, where Dave and Jeff were both speakers at the Maui Writers Conference. They met and became instant friends. One day they took a walk and Jeff laid out a game plan for turning one of Dave's most popular and most loved books into a movie. Dave told Jeff he must be thinking of a different book; the GUIDE TO GUYS had no characters and no story, and that most of the movies Dave had seen in his life tended to have those things. When Jeff assured Dave that this was the book he meant, Dave said he was crazy. Jeff said he knew he was crazy but there was still a good movie in the book. By then Dave had to go to the bathroom, so he said all right.
Fast forward to 2004, and they're ready to go. Jeff adapted the book and turned it into a movie script. It now has characters, and even something resembling a story, Dave plays himself - the Guide. A hearty brew of documentary techniques, vignettes and non sequitur absurdity, Dave Barrys Complete Guide to Guys looks to quench humankinds thirst for wisdom about that separate strain of homo sapiens known as guyus erectus. Beginning in prehistoric cave days showing the link, for example, between streamlined hunting implements and the dawn of sports we travel through time to probe the vast mystery of guyness. The examination goes deeper than the subject itself, moving past such foibles as leaving the toilet seat up and not asking for directions, and delving into guys obsession with sports, electronic devices, sleek cars, ultimate tool kits, and, of course, the body part that controls their every thought and move.
Woven throughout the study are Roger (LOCHLYN MUNRO) and Elaine (CHRISTINA MOORE), a typical couple who embody the dynamic between guys and women and who, frankly, provide some semblance of a plot. Through their exploits and those of their friends Gene (KHALIL KAIN) and Kelly (MEGAN WARD), we come to understand guy syndromes such as Lust-Induced Brain Freeze, the chromosome that makes guys believe that they can fix household appliances, and the metaphysical power that allows guys to affect the outcome of a game by collectively channeling concern toward the television set.
Along the way we meet Steve (CARLOS PONCE), the ultimate handyman who makes women swoon and guys nervous, an all-star lineup of sports luminaries (DICK VITALE, DAN MARINO, HANK GOLDBERG) who provide color commentary on important subjects such as public restroom dynamics, and four different experts (all played by JOHN CLEESE) whose insights are generally useless. Finally theres the films guide (DAVE BARRY), who serves as a ubiquitous escort as he tosses off chestnuts on subjects ranging from fear of relationships to fear of sexual expectations to fear of the dreaded doctors glove.
From all over this great country we also hear from women on the street, all kinds of women with lots of things to say about guys, not that it does any good. Because lets face it: Guys arent about to change. A thousand years from now theyll still be obsessing over the latest hovercraft at the dealership or cheering their favorite team on the Holo-Sim. And if theres any comfort in continuity, there you have it.
was formed in 2003, with the initial purpose of turning into a feature motion picture. Other films will follow.
